What is speculative fiction?

 

Speculative fiction is a broad category that covers a variety of narrative fiction referring to any fictional story that includes elements, settings and characters whose features are created from within the human imagination and speculation instead of based on accepted reality and everyday life. Speculative fiction encompasses the genres of science fiction, fantasy, science fantasy, horror, alternative history, and magic realism, and any subgenre within those fields. (biopunk, paranormal, etc.)
